Dificultades y logros: historias de vida de maestras y maestros puertorriqueños en las décadas del 1920 al 1950

Resumen

El propósito de este estudio fue capturar, mediante entrevistas de historia oral, las voces intimas y personales de maestros que laboran en el sistema educativo puertorriqueño durante las décadas del 1920 al 1950 con el fin de documentar la educación desde la perspectiva de quienes la forjaron, conservar sus vivencias y arrojar luz que contribuya a entender los problemas del presente. Los hallazgos indican que los seis maestros y maestras participantes enfrentaron y superaron un sinnúmero de situaciones difíciles en sus vidas cotidianas, trayectorias académicas y quehaceres como maestros. No obstante, sufrieron valorar las oportunidades que les brindó la vida y aprovecharlas al máximo para luego dar de lo mejor de si a su profesión y a su pueblo, dejando en ellos huellas indelebles. De ellos aprendemos la necesidad de rescatar y retomar los valores medulares que se han opacado con el materialismo desmedido que domina nuestra sociedad en la actualidad.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to record, through oral history interviews, the intimate and personal voices of teachers who worked in Puerto Rico ’s public schools during the 1920s through the 1950s in order to portray the emerging educational system from the perspective of the persons who forget it, document their experiences, and provide insight on present day problems. The findings indicate that the six participants faced and overcame innumerable difficulties in their daily lives, academic carriers, and teaching. Nevertheless, they valued and made the most of the opportunities life offered them and invested the best of their abilities in their people and in their profession, leaving indelible imprints upon them. Their stories teach us the need to recover and reaffirm core values which have been losing ground due to the rampant materialism that dominates our society in this day and age.
