El
deporte organizado como contexto social constructor y reproductor de una
masculinidad limitante

Resumen
Este
artículo explora los conceptos asociados al discurso dominante de género y la
construcción de la masculinidad desde el deporte organizado. Específicamente,
cómo este modelo de deporte organizado sirve de referencia y legitimación para
el mantenimiento de actitudes y valores de una masculinidad limitante en la
sociedad puertorriqueña. Presentaremos las críticas al modelo de deporte
espectáculo, deporte de lato rendimiento y el poder como un contexto social
reproductor de una representación de la masculinidad limitante y un sistema
heterosexual de relaciones de género. Se discutirá cómo estos procesos dentro
de las estructuras deportivas y como estos refuerzan los roles readicionales de
género, los cuales son por naturaleza restrictivos y, en muchas ocasiones,
originan interacciones negativas entre los individuos. Se señalan
principalmente las concepciones hegemónicas de la masculinidad que limitan el
desarrollo de los varones, reduciendo su capacidad para tener relaciones
significativas y contribuyendo a relaciones de poderes fijos, basados en la
competencia, violencia y opresión.

Abstract
This
article explores the concepts associated with the dominant gender discourse and
the construction of masculinity from within organized sport. Specifically, how
in the Puerto Rican society this organized sport model serves as reference and
legitimates the maintenance of limiting masculinity values and attitudes. The
spectacle, high performance, and power model for sport discussed as a social
context reproducing the representation of a limiting masculinity and a
heterosexual gender system. Furthermore, the article addresses how these
processes are promoted from within the sport structures and how they reinforce
the traditional gender roles, which are by nature restrictive and in most cases
create negative interactions between individuals. The hegemonic conceptions of
masculinity are pointed out as these limit male development, reducing their
capacities to develop significant relations and contributing to static power
relations, based on competition, violence and oppression.
