Resumen
La falta de motivación y oportunidades para participar en actividades físicas y deportes limita en las niñas su capacidad para desarrollar destrezas de movimiento fundamentales para una vida saludable. El desconocimiento sobre los beneficios fisiológicos, sociales y culturales del ejercicio y la actividad física en la mujer puede ser una explicación. Las investigaciones científicas han ayudado a cambiar la imagen negativa que ha sufrido la mujer deportista a través de los años. Cuando antes se consideraba que el deporte era física y emocionalmente perjudicial para la mujer, ahora se conoce que al igual que el hombre, la mujer está capacitada para entrenar, competir y sobresalir en cualquier deporte. El trasfondo histórico de la mujer en el deporte en Puerto Rico e internacionalmente, el impacto del Título IX y el papel que puede desempeñar la Educación Física son necesarios para entender la importancia de proveer equidad en el deporte y la actividad física.

The lack of opportunities and motivation for girls to participate in sports and physical activities affects their capacity to develop the fundamental movement skills required for a healthy lifestyle. One possible explanation is the lack of knowledge about the physiological, psychological, social and cultural benefits of exercise and physical activity in girls and women. The negative image suffered by many women athletes started to change in the recent years. Scientific data has shown that far from being physically or emotionally dangerous, physical activity and sports contribute to the women’s general wellness. Girls and women are capable of training, competing and succeeding in any sport they choose to participate. The historical background of women’s sport participation in Puerto Rico and internationally, the impact of Title IX, and the role of Physical Education are necessary to understand the importance of providing equal opportunities for all boys and girls, men and women.
